One of the nicest features of our urban infill homes is the ability to develop unique outdoor space where non existed before. As such, most of our new developments have roof decks with optional kitchens. Our engineer designed our roof deck to withstand hurricane force winds (which we do not have here in San Antonio) so I guess you can call it over engineered for safety. Each 10 foot angle iron is bolted to the roof deck in 4 places and to the parapet wall in 24 places. Just drilling the holes through the 1/4″ galvanized iron takes a lot of effort!
